Alcohols are organic compounds that contain one or more hydroxyl groups (–OH) attached to a saturated carbon atom (sp³ hybridized).
Their general formula is CₙH₂ₙ₊₁OH for simple monohydric alcohols.
The term “alcohol” commonly refers to ethanol (C₂H₅OH), the type of alcohol found in alcoholic beverages, but chemically, it represents a whole class of compounds
